Present tense verbs

These are the regular endings for verbs in the present tense

1st degree - yo, nosotros (as)

2nd degree- tu, vosotros (as)

3rd degree- el, ella, ud., ellos, ellas, uds. The regular endings for verbs in the present tense --->

Uses of the present indicative tense:

  • to express actions that are occurring as you speak.
    • Hablo con mis amigos.
  • to express actions that occur in the future
    • Manana, salgo para Barcelona.
  • to express general facts
    • El cielo es azul.
  • to express actions that occur habitually
    • Van a la corrida de toros todos los domingos.
  • to express a historical fact
    • Cervantes muere en 1616.
  • with the phrase "por poco" to express an action in the past that didn't occur
    • Por poco vengo a verte ayer. I almost came to see you yesterday.
  • to express an order
    • ?Me traes un vaso de agua, por favor?
  • to express the idea shall
    • ?Nos vamos? Shall we go?

It would be useless for me to type up the verbs that have funky accents in the present tense because I can't get accents on this. If you want to know them (which you probably do), go look at pg. 34 in your Avanzando textbook. While you're there, you can read up on -car -gar and -zar verbs.

There are three types of stem changes in the present tense:

e ---> ie like cerrar

o ---> ue like encontrar

e ---> i like pedir

Some verbs have irregular yo forms and stem changes

The following verbs have irregular forms only in the first person singular (yo).
